This timeline illustrates the number of active debit cards in Italy between 2010 and 2020, broken down by type. Over the period of consideration, the number of active debit cards that can be used both to withdraw money and at POS terminals increased steadily, growing from roughly 36.2 million in 2010, to over 57 million in 2019. By contrast, the number of debit cards that can be used only to withdraw money decreased steadily and such cards are disappearing. In 2010 there were about 1.1 million active debit card with withdrawal function only; the number registered in 2019 was 29 thousand.
